Moscow is the capital of Russia and the country's principal political, economic, financial, educational and transportation center, located on the river Moskva. The Central Federal District of the city is located in the west part of the Russian Federation. This historic position was central in the Russian homeland. It was the capital of the former Soviet Union, and of Muscovite Russia, the pre-Imperial Russia.

Red Square (Krasnaia Ploshchad')
Red Square is the most famous city square in Moscow. Originally an expanse of nothing more than mud, and populated by a ragged collection of hawkers, beggars and outcasts. Red Square acquired its present grandness in a gradual manner. The walls of the Kremlin loom on one side and the pale GUM department store on the opposite side. The St Basil's Cathedral is at the southern end of the square towers. |

St. Basil's Cathedral (Sobor Vasiliia Blazhennogo)
St. Basil's Cathedral is widely recognized of Russia's architectural monuments. St. Basil's looms at the southern end of Red Square in all its multi-colored, multi-coned glory. It was built between 1555 and 1561 to memorialize the victory of Ivan the Terrible over the Tatars in Kazan. The cathedral's real name is the Cathedral of the Intercession. It was built near the grave so-called, 'holy fool'. |

Cathedral of the Assumption (Uspenskii Sobor)
The Cathedral of the Assumption is the largest, oldest and the most important cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin. A tour takes through Novgorod, Vladimir and Pskov studying Russian architectural traditions, an Italian architect named Aristotle Fioravanti designed and built the cathedral between 1474 and 1478. The cathedral became the primary church of the Russian State. |

Alexander Gardens (Aleksandrovskii Sad)
An area of 10 hectares of the Alexandrovskii Gardens, developed between 1820 and 1823 and run along the west wall of the Kremlin. In his attempt to make the gardens as typical as possible Bove combined an orderly plan with the free arrangement of trees plus elements of romantic-style gardens. The gardens are bordered by decorative iron railings. |

Tretiakov Gallery (Tret'iakovskaia Galereia)
This gallery was founded by St. Petersburg in 1856. Pavel Tretiakov was collected the best work of contemporary painters in Moscow. His brother Sergei collected the French and Dutch masters. Combined their collections and opened this extremely popular museum in 1872. It was donated to the city of Moscow, in 1892. |

Tolstoy Museum (Muzei L.N. Tolstogo)
From 1882 to 1901, Leo Tolstoy who the great Russian author lived here with his family. The museum was founded in 1911. The eight galleries here illustrate the life of the War and Peace author at the end of the 19th century. Total collection of the museum includes more than 545 000 exhibition pieces. In addition, the Tolstoy novels, portraits, sculptures and photographs. |

The Kremlin (Kreml')
The Kremlin is one of the most intriguing ensembles of buildings in Moscow and its architectural variety reveals a long and fascinating history. The walls were originally built from white stone, but were rebuilt in the late 15th century with their distinctive red brick.
