Kyoto
Introduction |
 |
|
| |
Kyoto
was Japan's capital and the emperor's
residence from 794 until 1868. Countless
temples, shrines and other historically
priceless structures survive in the
city today. A three hour trip by Shinkansen
(Bullet Train) from the hustle, bustle
and endless concrete of Tokyo, Kyoto
moves at a slower pace and gives one
a better sense of Japanese art, architecture
and culture.

Kiyomizudera
The ‘Pure
water temple’, Kiyomizudera,
is one of Japan’s most
celebrated temples, founded
in 780 and associated with Nara
Buddhism, the oldest sect in
Japan. The temple’s main
feature is the lovely view afforded
of the wooded hills of eastern
Kyoto from its terrace. It is
a popular temple with young
people who come to pray for
success in finding a suitable
partner at a Shinto shrine set
inside the complex. |

Nijo
Castle
Nijo Castle
like the shoguns' mausoleums
at Nikko, is an ostentatious
display of wealth and power
in contrast with the austerity
often shown in the buildings
of the Imperial nobility. visitors
walk through the castle, note
the wooden "nightingale
floors" that squeak merrily,
not as an aesthetic pleasure,
but to serve as an alarm against
night intruders. |
