Florence
Introduction |
 |
|
| |
Florence
is the world's premier treasury of Renaissance
art and architecture. Florence lies
along the banks of the Arno River. The
area surrounding the city is renowned
for olive oil and wind production. Florence
is unique and incomparable due to mass
of the great artists of the Renaissance
lived and worked here.

Baptistery
Baptistery
is 6th or 7th century architecture
dedicated to St. John and
covered with marble around
1059-1128. The octagonal drum
was rebuilt in the 11th century,
and by the 13th century it
had been clad in its characteristic
green-and-white Romanesque
stripes of marble and capped
with its odd pyramid-like
dome.

Santa
Maria della Carmine
Santa
Maria della Carmine church was
almost entirely reconstructed
and decorated in high baroque
style. Ever since a long and
expensive restoration of the
famous frescoes of the Cappella
Brancacci in the right transept,
they've blocked off just that
chapel and you have to enter
through the cloisters and pay
admission. |

of Santa Maria dei Fiori
Cathedral
of Santa Maria del Fiore, more
commonly known as the Duomo,
was finished in 1434. It is
the third largest cathedral
in the world. Its dome rises
some 300 feet above the city.
The trademark dome on this cathedral
has become the symbol of Florence.
From the the dome visitor experience
spectacular view of the city. |

Orsanmichele
Orsanmichele,
which connects the piazza of
the Duomo to the piazza of the
Signoria, built as a granary/grain
market in 1337. The city's merchant
guilds each undertook the task
of decorating one of the outside
nichelike Gothic tabernacles
around the lower level with
a statue of their guild's patron
saint. |

Medici
Chapels
Medici
Chapels one of the world's most
god-awful and arrogant memorials,
dedicated to the grand dukes,
some of Florence's most decrepit
tyrants. The solid and articulated
architectural structure and
the strength of Michelangelo's
sculptures clearly reflect a
complex symbolism. |

Santa
Maria Novella
Santa
Maria Novella houses numerous
important works from the 14th,
15th and 16th centuries. The
church's interior underwent
a massive restoration in the
late 1990s, returning Gioto's
restored Crucifix to pride of
place, hanging in the nave's
center and becoming the first
church in Florence to charge
admission. |
