Atlantic City Travel Guide
|
| Atlantic City |
Once
upon a time in Atlantic
City, you could watch a horse and rider leap from a four-story-high
platform and land in a shallow pool of water. Today, the main
diversion is watching money leap from your hand into the pocket
of a casino owner.
We miss the horses, but there's no denying that casino gambling
revived Atlantic City as a travel destination. Happily, some
of the pre-casino past remains -- the grand boardwalk is still
there, and you will still find squalling gulls, sea air, amusement
rides and fast-food stands. It's the perfect place to clear
your head after the whirl and glitter of the casinos.
Although Atlantic City attracts gamblers
and day-trippers en masse, nowadays there is more to do
year-round than you would ever imagine. Along with the dazzling
hotel-casinos, Miss America pageantry and entertainers such
as Bruce Springsteen, Britney Spears, Elton John and even
Paul McCartney, you can take in historic landmarks, marvelous
museums and wineries. Restaurant choices are vast, from
award-winning classics and trendy new hot spots to boardwalk
stands such as Mr. Peanut. Adventure-minded vacationers
can try kayaking or fishing, and golfers can tee up at one
of 26 championship golf courses.

| Nature
and Adventure |
| For
sun- and surf-seekers and for the greatest choice of activities,
summer is the best time to visit the Jersey shore. Spring
and fall are also good choices, with a very pleasant average
temperature range of 56-72 F/13-22 C. But keep in mind that
Atlantic City is a great destination all year-round, with
plenty to see and do. (Even in winter, bundling up and strolling
the boardwalk wrapped in a warm coat is enjoyable.). Because
of the sea breezes, you may want to have a sweater or jacket
handy even in the summer.
